Of blogs, newsletters and stamina

At times there may seem to be an inconsistency between the general theme of my advice and my behaviour.  I’m thinking here particularly in regard to this blog, but it may appear occasionally to manifest itself in other areas of my business too.

Those of you who have spent time with me, or have read my previous posts to any extent, will know that I’m a strong advocate of planning, both within the business environment and within the richness of  general life.  So why do I, of all people, currently have a sporadic approach to posting on these pages?  It’s not as if there’s a paucity of things to say!

As with much of my business, it comes down to a need to better understand the entrepreneurial or individual condition.  It is very easy for a consultant to imprint his or her business system on a client company, but my experience from both sides of that relationship, is that it does not always lead to the desired result.  What is required is a better understanding of why people don’t do things that they know are good for themselves and their businesses.

As with any industry, the better you can understand your client’s behaviour in the context of their business and the challenges they face, the better able you are to help them. This is how we can bring a degree of empathy into play, whilst simultaneously offering the external’s unique perspective to help them solve the challenge.

The secret to this (it’s not really a secret, now is it?) is to be more curious, asking your clients, as well as contacts in similar circumstances, what is going on in their world.  Placing yourself in a similar situation, in your mind or in reality, in order to better understand their mental frames.  Creating effective solutions to the challenges you can see they face.

Many people or companies start blogs or newsletters and then at some point abandon them, despite the attendant negative messaging this presents to the world.  If you’re interested in why this happens and what you can do to overcome these challenges, just email me and I’ll be happy to share my simple observations and thoughts with you.

And just in case you think I’m saying ‘do as I say, not as I do’, may I point you in the direction of www.FosterRuns.com which is currently into 357 posts and coming up for three yeas old.
